HDC Hyundai Development Company wins a construction project for BSMMU Hospital in Bangladesh, Pioneering the overseas construction business

- HDC succeeds in winning the project based on recognition of its technological skills accumulated through hospital construction projects in Korea.
- HDC Hyundai Development Company implements overseas projects with a substantial feasibility review.

HDC Hyundai Development Company has recently reinforced its position in the overseas market by winning a construction project for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in Bangladesh, worth about US$63 million (about 68 billion Korean won). The company, which already won orders for the construction of Banegas Bridge in Bolivia in 2014 and for the Hung Ha Bridge Construction Project in 2015, has expanded its territory in the overseas market.

The BSMMU Hospital Project has been launched by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh’s top national university located in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The hospital will serve as the first specializing in treating severely ill patients. Once the 700-bed BSMMU Hospital (with 9 stories above ground and 2 stories below ground) is completed on the 53,000m2 site, it will offer the biggest medical service system in Bangladesh.

The main driving forces behind winning the project were HDC Hyundai Development Company’s technological skills accumulated through Korean hospital construction projects, including Asan Medical Center (Seoul), Ulsan University Hospital’s Ulsan Cancer Center, and Gangneung Asan Hospital, and the company’s cost competitiveness. Taking this opportunity, the company plans to actively explore high-quality projects in infrastructure and construction by establishing additional branches in Vietnam and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, HDC Hyundai Development Company has been steadily operating in the high-risk overseas market. Having successfully completed construction of the Banegas Bridge in Bolivia last September, the company is also steadily proceeding with the Hung Ha Bridge Construction Project. In the future, HDC Hyundai Development Company will continue to obtain lucrative overseas orders based on its strong financial structure and differentiated competitiveness.

“This project is meaningful because it is the largest in the hospital sector among the government’s official development assistance (ODA) efforts,” said an official from HDC Hyundai Development Company. The official added, “In addition to stable projects such as this one, which is funded by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), the company is planning to engage in overseas projects as a developer.”
